Latest parent review! My son was interested in learning about collaging, and this class invigorated his creative palate...he really enjoyed the three days. The collage techniques he learned were exciting, and the projects and pieces open your mind up to new ways to look at paper and art materials. Super cool, thank you so much.Rating: 5 / 5 In this camp, students will be shown collaging techniques and be presented with examples and instruction for 3 different collages. We'll also talk about the variety of papers used in collage (magazines, old mail, letters, etc.), and how so much of what we already have in our house can be repurposed into art. We will discuss different types of adhesive, and I'll show students how to glue their work down without it wrinkling, and what to do if paper rips. I will guide students as they collage, then show them ways to rip, cut, trim, shape, refine, and/or add detail to their work. As we work, we'll discuss choosing our color palettes and the ways in which texture and word/image choice can enhance a piece. Once students are ready to arrange their images, we'll talk about concepts such as balance, harmony, and the importance of developing their own original artistic voice. We will also talk about ways to display, share, and gift their completed collages. The emphasis on this class will be to have fun, explore, and create. There will be time at the end for students to share their work and offer one another positive and supportive feedback. Students do not need to have any prior collage experience, but they must be able to handle scissors on their own. The first part of each camp session will be a Check In, followed by the Introduction of the collage of the day. Then, students will have a Working Session as they take time to gather, organize, cut, and paste their items. I will be working with them, offering support and tips, and reminding them to go with the flow of their art! Supply List
I want to emphasize that I encourage learners to use items they have around the house, and not go buy a bunch of stuff. Repurpose, recycle, and reuse! - scissors - For glue to collage with: acrylic gloss or matte medium (I use Liquitex Matte Medium, but any would work), Modge Podge, glue stick, or school glue. To add any items beyond paper to collage: an all-purpose craft adhesive - To spread glue: old hotel or credit card, frosting spreader, plastic knife, or paintbrush - heavy background surface paper (watercolor paper, cereal, food, or package box, cardboard, old playing cards for Artist Trading Card, etc) - different types of paper for collaging: printer paper, construction paper, origami paper, rice paper, tissue paper, old scrap paper, newspaper, pages from old books or magazines, letters, junk mail, photos, postcards, etc. If you want to use a meaningful keepsake letter or photo, for example, maybe make a copy of it to use in your collage. - A thin to medium permanent marker or charcoal pencil - Masking tape - A few coins or rocks (I'll explain the first day!) - Small items to possibly add to collage: old game pieces, beads, stickers, yarn - crayons, colored pencils, sharpies, gel pens, metallic pens, oil pastels, watercolor and/or acrylic paints and brushes

Teacher expertise and credentials
After earning a BA in Writing and Photography, I have been a high school teacher and counselor for 27 years. I have always incorporated art and writing into my lessons, groups, and individual work with students. Art and writing are amazing tools to explore and express our inner selves, and it's always so fun to have a cool display piece or gift at the end. I look forward to creating alongside your learner, and providing positive feedback and encouragement the whole way!
