This flex session offers students in grades 2-6 preparing to take CogAT test an opportunity to practice focus and assess their current level. Take the practice tests in verbal, quantitative and non-verbal areas at your own pace.

What's included

Class Experience

Students will take the CogAT practice tests that has verbal, quantitative and non-verbal areas in order to assess their readiness for the CogAT Gifted Talented exam. The CogAT measures cognitive development and problem-solving skills and usually administered at school starting as early as Kindergarten. Your student's placement in advanced and gifted and talented learning opportunities and later in middle school in AP classes are determined by the CogAT test in most school districts. Each week materials will be posted on Sunday for the upcoming week in the areas to be covered and questions that class assessments identify as challenging will be posted for discussion and students will post the questions that they find challenging or what methods they use to solve the questions. During this course, the students will have a chance to practice verbal, quantitative and nonverbal sections of the test. Basic arithmetic skills such as addition and subtraction and mastery of vocabulary and reading will be helpful for preparing for the test. The tests assigned will be determine by the age of the student. Grade 2/3 level test will be available for students who are 7-9 years old and Grade 4/5/6 tests will be assigned to older group.The challenges and related videos or handouts will be posted every week on Sunday mornings for the upcoming week for verbal, nonverbal and quantitative areas to prepare to take the CogAT gifted talented test. The results of the class challenges and tests will be made available. Students will post their challenges and successes to share with the classroom.

This will also provide an opportunity to practice staying focused for a long period of time during the exam.
Week 1: Verbal analogies, sentence completion and verbal classification with practice questions.
Week 2: Number analogies, number puzzles and number series with practice questions.
Week 3: Figure matrices, and figure classification.
Week 4: Paper folding and overall results.

Sources
The tests are prepared on Kahoot. The students do not need an account created on Kahoot and will be assigned the test to complete on their own. It is important to set aside 60-90 minutes of undivided time during which the student can take the test and practice not only the competencies but being able to keep focused to prepare for the actual test.

I am a life-long learner and teacher. I graduated from Istanbul American Robert College (a high school registered in NY) and then moved on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Information and Systems Science in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and to Oklahoma State for Masters in Mathematics and MBA. I spent most of my years tutoring English and Mathematics to help pay my way through college. I have been a graduate teaching assistant in College of Business, Mathematics and Athletics Departments during graduate school. In addition to my carrier in information technology and project management, I continued to teach at several universities such as University of Phoenix and Sullivan University and served on the curriculum boards and several professional organizations such as Project Management Institute. My teams won Future Problem Solving and Future City Engineering Competition competitions. I discovered Russian School of Mathematics also when my daughter was in elementary school where I was invited to join as a math coach as well. I continue to make a difference with helping students improve their SAT/ACT/PSAT scores, coaching at debate competitions and clubs. I am the mother of two children one of which created her lemonade business in which I helped her and her business partners create their business plans. I enjoy learning as well as teaching a wide variety of classes including Mathematics, Entrepreneurship, CogAT Cognitive Apptitute Test for gifted talented, PSAT/SAT/ACT test prep, project management, computer programming, web development, project management and Micosoft Office products and crafts (I enjoy crafts!).
