4 live meetings
3 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will be asked to complete an assignment between class 3 and 4 to share with the class. It will take about 1-2 hours.Class Experience
PLEASE NOTE: Check the dates of the classes, some sections run 2 times per week and some run one time per week, per parent request. Coding is a process that allows students to problem solve, think creatively, find resilience and verbalize a thought process. Students will attend the zoom class on one device and then use an ipad or android tablet or chrome book to run the Scratch Jr. app. Learners do not have to know how to read to fully indulge in creating with code in this class. Class 1 - Learners will get a broad overview of the app and how it works. They will follow directions to create an actionable event using simple sequencing and one conditional block. At the end of class, students will be asked to explain what they learned that was new to them. Class 2 - Learners will build upon sequencing with more than one character, and expand their knowledge of conditionals. They will be asked to program 2 or more characters with a single conditional as well as exploring other conditional options. At the end of class, students will be asked to explain what they learned that was new to them. Class 3 - Learners will combine sequencing, conditionals, and we will add loops to create a actionable scene(s). At the end of class, students will be asked to explain what they learned that was new to them. Class 4 - Learners will be guided through the importance of planning out multiple scene "story", then creating what they have planned and making changes where necessary to debug or improve the coded scene. They will be required to share their creation and will be asked to explain what the idea was, what mistakes were made and what needed to be done to improve it.

I have been teaching on Outschool since April of 2020 and am an elementary school educator who knows how to create hands on activities which empower thriving children of all ages.
I specialize in providing a vast variety of hands on activities that promote the value of social and emotional intelligence as well as the importance of showing children their potential. There is not always a right answer in learning, children thrive in all different ways and I find great joy in helping them discover their gifts and talents.
Over the course of 25 years in the classroom, I have taught 1st grade, kindergarten through 3rd grade media literacy classes, and kindergarten through 5th grade computer application classes. I have also tutored kindergarten through 5th grade students in all subject areas and am TESOL certified. I am an advocate for children and believe in helping them to reach their potential, while understanding all of our minds think differently. Being able to discover how each person finds success is such a gift.
I am a proud owner of Boomer, my Labrador Retriever. He loves to be by me all the time and wants to be part of my teaching. Pets bring such joy and unconditional love, that it just seems natural to involve him in my classes. He has a lot to teach and learn!
