In this class, we will continuously explore the ins and outs of the Scratch Jr. coding platform and explore what it means to 'code' something. This is a child-led, interactive class that relies upon ideas suggested by the learners. It is VERY helpful if learners have access to Scratch Jr. on their computer or another device, (instructions in the Materials section below) though it isn't required and they may follow along with my screen. It is recommended you start with my Intro to Coding with Scratch Jr. class or at least get somewhat familiar with the app on your own prior to class. My teaching philosophy: I believe learning happens best when it is connected to our interests, so I always encourage learners to take ownership of their projects. This means that much of class is about supporting learners to create goals for themselves, and then helping them move from A to B. We still follow the teacher in certain moments, but most of this class is about building independence with technology and developing problem-solving skills in a fun way, and using critical thinking skills rather than just copy and pasting what I do. Each class will have a learner-directed formatted as such: -We will begin each class by talking about our ideas, and deciding what we will create. -As we come up with our ideas for the day, we will talk about sending 'messages' to our characters, to practice breaking down multi-step instructions towards our goal. -Then, we will translate these ideas into Scratch Jr. -We will combine blocks together to practice sequences and pattern recognition, as well as early numeracy skills. I always encourage learners to attempt to solve problems on their own before working through it together. While I always encourage grown-up support, please allow your learner to engage in class by themselves as much as possible. Trying, failing, and learning how to communicate our problems to others is how we learn! Learners on the younger side of our age range (3 and sometimes 4) will likely need extra technical support from adults during class to Mute/Unmute, or use the program. Learning note: During class, we will be using Scratch Jr., talking about ideas, and moving our bodies. We use these different strategies so that children are not expected to sit for the entire hour and have choices in their expression of ideas. Multiple breaks, including movement, doodling, or eating are supported in this class as needed. Please let me know if your learner needs any specific support prior to class.

Once downloaded, learners can keep track of everything they make and continue to access it.
This resource will be used in a screen share by me, and learners are invited to use their own Scratch Jr. on a separate device if possible during class to follow along and create their own versions of projects.

Master's Degree in Education from University of Colorado - Denver
Hi! I'm Soleil (so-LAY) and I teach a variety of classes here at Outschool, from engineering and coding, to improv and performing basics. I have so many different passions, and love showing kids that they can explore multiple interests, too.
I have been a teacher in various formal and informal roles for several years now, and hold a Master's degree in Learning, Developmental, and Family Sciences with an Early Childhood emphasis. I'm a state certified teacher for birth-6th grade, but I love working with people of all ages!
My classes are student-led and inquiry-driven, and no two are the same for that very reason. I believe in following children, and see myself as a collaborator who scaffolds thinking, not as a directive leader. Any time I can give my students a voice and a chance to lead, I do! I follow Reggio-inspired principles and believe in connecting first and foremost with my students, as well as giving them the opportunity to connect with each other.
I love inspiring new ideas and ways of thinking, and feel so much joy in seeing children grow as makers, thinkers, performers, and creators. I can't wait to see you in class!
