Class Experience

PLEASE NOTE: This club is for users of Procreate, which is an art app for iPad. Students must have Procreate, but they can either use an Apple Pencil, a different stylus, or their finger to draw; whichever they prefer.

In this Procreate drawing club, learners can enjoy a collaborative experience where we use our imaginations to create an illustration based on a spooky theme. I will present the general theme each week, but from there, the drawing will be student led with ideas they contribute. I will demonstrate our drawings step by step, but students are welcome to change up their drawings. They can use a different art style, change certain details, or draw something entirely different. Or, they can follow along exactly with me and at the end of class, everyone will be welcome to show their artworks. They can also post them in the classroom so that we can see them better. With parent permission, I will share the artwork on my social media if the student would like me to.

While we draw, the learners are encouraged to socialize and make friends. We may also make up a story of sorts about our drawings. If we do, I will type up our short stories and publish them on my website, where I am posting a collection of kid friendly spooky stories for kids! Students who want their name published with any stories we create will be listed as coauthors on my website.

Although this is a social, student led club, I will demonstrate and explain many Procreate techniques. I will also answer any questions they may have about digital drawing and help them troubleshoot anything they’ve had difficulty with. We will also explore different art styles such as folk art, pop surrealism, kawaii, and more.

Here are the themes for each week:

August 26 Zombie
Sept 2 Severed
Sept 9 Haunted
Sept 16 Witch
Sept 23 Dia De Los Muertos

Learning Goals

1. Learn tips and techniques for Procreate app
2. Practice and improve digital art skills
3. Explore the world of spooky art and stories through discussion
4. Learn a variety of different art styles
5. Learn a variety of ways to make your Procreate art look (colored pencil, marker, oil paint, etc.)
6. Connect our drawings to academic subjects such as Grimm Fairy Tales and the works of Edgar Allan Poe
7. Learn about giving and receiving feedback to grow our skills

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class ties into ā€œspookyā€ subjects such as ghost stories, horror movies and books, gothic art, etc. Because I encourage discussion and sharing about topics that my students love, spooky things will often be discussed so if your child does not enjoy scary things, they may not enjoy this club. Examples of possible discussion topics: Creepypasta, RL Stine books, Grimm fairy tales, Five Nights at Freddys and other spooky video games
Supply List
IPad
Procreate App
(Optional) an Apple Pencil or stylus (many artists prefer to simply draw with their finger)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Amanda Gatton is a life long lover of all things Halloween. It is Halloween every day in my world. I am the perfect person to bring the creep to your learner who loves ghost stories. As a professional artist and author, and a teacher with a dark and creepy heart, I can bring the magic of spooky art to your learners while helping them make friends who share their interests.
