Have you ever wanted to send a secret message? Shortly after the invention of written language, people realized that they needed ways to disguise the message of their writing. Whether it was sending military plans, sharing information between spies, or just passing secrets between friends, the field of Steganography (covered writing) has a long history. Students will -- learn to create and decode several different types of ciphers. -- understand frequency analysis and how it can be used to brute force decode a text. -- understand the purposes of encryption in modern life and the role of mathematicians in modern government and business.
Students will want paper and pencil for encoding and decoding.
