Class Experience

In this lesson, students will learn the basics of the Scratch programming language. They’ll use these basics to create a simple, spinning fortune teller. They don’t need any prior Scratch knowledge to complete this project.

They’ll learn how to draw the game's graphical elements and how to write code for each one.

They should use a Chromebook or a laptop. A tablet works too, but it's a little harder to use with Scratch.

Parents will need to sign their kids up for a Scratch account ( scratch.mit.edu ) before the start of the lesson.

Students will follow along as I walk them through all the steps. In order to be successful, they’ll need to be comfortable switching back-and-forth between the Zoom window and the Scratch window on their laptop or Chromebook.

Students will be able to un-mute themselves and ask me questions whenever they want (unless a specific child gets out of hand—then I’ll ask them to start giving me a thumbs-up sign if they want to ask a question).

Students will be allowed to share their projects with each other via Zoom's screen share at the end of class.

Other Details

Supply List
Students will need a Scratch account set up prior to the start of class. If two technological devices are available, they should use one device to observe what I'm doing on Zoom, and another device (laptop or Chromebook) to interact with Scratch. Otherwise, they can use the same device for Zoom and Scratch, but they may need some in-person help switching between the two windows (at least initially).

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Zach, and I'm a full-time technology teacher at a private elementary school in Manhattan. In addition to my regular job, I offer tutoring in various technology-related subjects to children of all ages.

In a nutshell, my goal is to teach children to become creative, production-oriented users of technology rather than passive, consumption-oriented users of technology. In other words, rather than simply consume what other have made with technology, I want children to use technology to produce their own creations.

Having taught for over 12 years, my lessons are fun, engaging, and educational. In my classes, children can expect to experience success in a short amount of time. Furthermore, over the long run, they will not only develop technological competency, they will also build skills in critical thinking, artistic representation, practical design, and logical reasoning.

I offer classes in the subjects of coding, robotics, animation, movie making, game design, 3d design, digital drawing, and more. I look forward to working with you!
