Coco Chanel: Life & Style
Class experience
This is a discussion based class about the life and style of Coco Chanel. Fewer characters in the history of fashion are as fascinating and contested as Coco. Born to a poor family and placed in an orphanage as a child, she became many things; master courtier, singer, Nazi spy... In this class, we'll be discussing life and opportunity for women like Coco in the 1900s, and about Coco's impact on fashion. We will look at pictures of both she and her life and legacy, as well as some written...
Students will trace the evolution of fashion during Coco Chanel's lifetime. Students will analyze the choices Coco Chanel made during her life. Students will discuss if Coco Chanel's lifestyle choices make her a worthy feminist icon. Students will design using certain aesthetics that Coco championed, such as with jersey knits and loose, straight lines.
There is nothing I love more than dissecting historical characters and deciding where they belong in our collective cultural and historical conscience. I have been teaching fashion design for over 4 years and love combining history with fashion.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Coco Chanel is a contested historical character. She gained a lot of her fame and wealth in large part due to her secret sexual relationships with powerful men, including Nazis during the occupation of France. While this won't be majorly discussed, it's impossible to teach about Coco's life without mentioning her role as a mistress. This class will also discuss anti-antisemitism, as Coco Chanel was an anti-semite. Additionally, I will be providing croquis- a nude, undetailed female figure- to draw fashion on.
Hi! My name is Melissa Quijano (she/her) and I teach classes focused on history and fashion. Whether my classes are focused on the contemporary or the past, I want students to come away with a greater understanding of their culture and themselves....
