Intermediate Level
In this ongoing book club, we will read books discussing climate change, renewable, and non-renewable energies. Our first book,""Unsettled: What Science Tells Us, What It Doesn't, and Why It Matters"" is written by the former Undersecretary of Science, U.S. Dept. of Energy under the Obama administration and professor of theoretical physics. Learners will be assigned a specific chapter reading and questions to prepare for each class. Weekly class meetings will provide an opportunity for students to discuss and debate the readings. Classes will be student centered with teacher facilitation. We will to cover one chapter per week. Parental Guidance
This journey is neither intended to nor will it tell students what to think. It is a journey of discovery intended to inform and help students evaluate, understand, and deepen their understanding of science and the environment.
Pre-Requisites
An understanding of the scientific method and basics of science are helpful but this will be a learning experience related to environmental science and climate with teaching opportunity for certain topics.
Supply List
Unsettled by Steven E. Koonin. We wil be referencing and marking the text so I recommend a hard copy of the book, new or used. Available on Amazon approximately $12 USD. The e-book is an option if you are comfortable highlighting, bookmarking, etc in this format. There is an expanded version, very new and only available for Kindle or Audible but I will not be referencing this version at this time. You might also need index cards, a composition book for additional notes, and highlighters.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Students are encouraged to research websites, publications, or other books that may be used to support their arguments in contradiction to the ideas expressed in the reading. Reliability of sources will be examined as part of the learning process.
