Class Experience

Cleopatra was destined to become the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt ascending to the throne at only 17 years old. Cleopatra was of Macedonian descent and had little, if any, Egyptian blood, although the Classical author Plutarch wrote that she took the trouble to learn Egyptian and, for political reasons, styled herself as the Egyptian goddess Isis. Cleopatra was born into a complicated life, family power struggles combined with foreign invasion created a life full of politics and tension for Cleopatra but also a life full of immense luxury and decadence. This course will detail how Cleopatra came to power, thrived and then died, in this hostile environment. This is a 'fun-lecture' based course which includes PowerPoint and video clips - I am trying to get a lot of information into you hands in this one hour! Lots of time for Q&A and reflection at the end and sometimes this class does run over time.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The life of Cleopatra is an amazing adventure but does include some sensitive subjects. Extra-marital affairs (with Julius Ceasar and Marc Antony), suicide (Cleopatra and Marc Antony) and Goddess worship (Cleopatra believed herself to be the Egyptian Goddess Isis). I do not dwell on these topics but they are critical parts of Cleopatra’s story and so are talked about in class. I have set the age range from 9-14 and feel comfortable teaching this topic to that age range - maybe even mature 8 year olds. Please take these sensitive topics into account when deciding to take this class.
