I am a graduate of Kean University of New Jersey and have a B.A. in Teacher of the Handicapped (Special Education). I have a current certification in New Jersey as a Special Education teacher with 15 years of classroom experience in teaching reading and writing skills to students in elementary and middle school. I hold a current certification in Elementary Education and I have a certification in the Wilson Reading Program, Level 1, Steps 1-6. I have taught reading and writing comprehension to students with learning disabilities as well as students in the General Education classroom. I also have a TESOL/TEFL certification and I have taught ESL online for two years. As a Special Education teacher, I have taught many students reading skills and techniques for successful comprehension. I have found that teaching basic reading skills and strategies has helped my students retain what they read. I've had great success teaching my reluctant readers with my own style of instruction! . My students' well being and love of learning has always been a priority for me. I am invested in providing a fun, high quality lesson because I love seeing their eyes light up with an "A-ha!" moment of understanding!
This is a no stress class so homework will be assigned as needed, at the discretion of the teacher.
Specific Notes and Organizers will be available for each individual learner prior to class. If you can't print your handouts, a paper and pen will do just fine!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I use an informal ongoing assessment as class progresses. This allows me to prompt students as needed (scaffold), and provide a rich learning experience. I usually find that in reading, simply re-framing and reexplaining a concept does wonders for learners' comprehension I am mindful of the sensitivity students may have, and I use a method of respectful, gentle correction.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Specific Notes and Organizers will be available for each individual learner prior to class. If you can't print your handouts, a paper and pen will do just fine!
