Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Intermediate Level
Welcome to Room Cleaning BINGO! — where we turn the chore of tidying up into a fun, interactive game. In this class, we’ll tackle the sometimes tedious task of cleaning our rooms with a twist: music, conversation, and a little friendly competition!

We'll start by chatting about different topics while listening to upbeat tunes. As we clean, students will check off their chores on a BINGO card. The goal? Be the first to shout BINGO! and win the chance to share two items from your room during Show and Tell. Everyone else gets to share one!

I’ll be there to guide the fun, making sure we stay on track, keeping the conversation flowing, and ensuring the music is just right. My teaching style is friendly and interactive — I love engaging in the discussion, offering support when needed, and creating lots of teachable moments along the way.

By the end of class, not only will your room be cleaner, but you’ll also have learned how to tackle those tasks with a positive attitude and alongside a few new friends!

Learning Needs
This course uses body-doubling and gamification to help kids with ADHD tackle tasks like room cleaning. Body-doubling boosts focus, while the fun, game-like elements keep them motivated and on track to finish!
Parental Guidance
Because of the nature of this course, the kids who attend should have at least a basic understanding of and ability to clean their rooms unassisted. For our purposes, however, there's no clean "standard," but rather a requirement that they can be trusted to use the required tools safely and unassisted (duster, mop/vacuum, surface spray, etc.). Please review the spots on the provided bingo board to prepare your child with your preferred choice of cleaning supplies. I will play music in the background for students to listen to as they clean. The music will be varied and listed under "sources." Please note that not every song will be played in every class, but all of the songs listed may be played at any time. Additionally, the instructor will guide conversation by listing various innocuous topics (What's the weather near you? Have you taken a test recently? What subject are you struggling with in school? What did you have for lunch? Et cetera.). Students will also be sharing an item of their choice from their rooms.
Pre-Requisites
Students should know where things belong, how to clean surfaces, use a vacuum or mop, fold clothes, and make a bed. Perfection isn't the goal—just the ability to complete these tasks independently and confidently!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Before I received a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Instructional Technology, I spent three years teaching 6th grade ELA and before that, I worked at an after-school program during college. I stayed home with both of my kids until they were 3, teaching and playing and coming up with age-appropriate educational activities every day. During COVID, I homeschooled my 2nd grade son for half a year! Though I work in Higher Ed now, I love (and miss!) teaching littles every day, and I'm so grateful for Outschool!

On a separate and more relevant-to-this-course note, both my daughter and I were recently diagnosed with ADHD and it has been SO eye-opening! After helping my daughter in all the ways I would have appreciated when I was a young, undiagnosed ADHDer, I’ve become deeply passionate about helping neurodivergent kids develop lifelong strategies to thrive in a neurotypical world. Hopefully, this course will serve as a piece of that puzzle!
