As the clay will need at least 24 hours to dry, decorating will take place after class.Class Experience
In this one hour class we will recycle screws into bird legs! Thickness may vary, but length must be the same for a stable bird. These quirky little guys are perfect for sitting on a shelf or windowsill. Air drying clay or polymer clay can be used for this project (this will require baking after class). I will guide the students and create along side them. Once our initial birds are made we will experiment with adding texture to the surface using tools. We will discuss ways to decorate the birds once the clay is dry or baked after class. Students may produce multiple birds in this class. What a flock we will make! This is a perfect start to clay exploration and no previous knowledge is required.
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic clay skills and fine detail modeling. We will pinch and pull the clay to create the bird feature and add texture with tools. Students will learn how recycled materials can be incorporated into their creations.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parental supervision maybe required as students are using metal screws.
Parental help will also be needed to bake the polymer clay after class. This is not necessary for air drying clay.
Supply List

A piece of cardboard to work on- a porous surface will enable easier clay removal Clay tools or plastic knife, fork, toothpicks etc Small pot of water to smooth clay A collections of screws - two per bird of matching lengths An apron Paper or plastic to cover your work space

Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Bachelor's Degree in Education from University Of Plymouth
Hello! My name is Katie Chad and I live in Texas. I received my Bachelor in Education with an Art and Design specialism and Qualified Teacher Status from Plymouth University in England. I have taught elementary education in Europe, The Middle East and North America.
My passion is creativity! Can I find a creative way to teach math? Is there a way I can spark excitement with poetry? Can we write a nail biting opening for a story? I love to explore new ideas and new techniques.
I love sculpture, whether I am using clay, fabric, paints, paper or recycled materials. I believe that art is a form of self discovery and exploration that is accessible to everyone whatever their experience.
My aim is to provide my students with techniques and ideas as a starting point for their own artistic discoveries. To provide encouragement and enthusiasm and the knowledge that there is no wrong answer, even happy accidents can result in fantastic creations!
Truth be told, I wish I’d been educated at Hogwarts. I have loved reading the books with my own children. We have thrown several elaborate Harry Potter parties at our house. I have been known to dress up as several of the characters including Professor McGonagall, Trelawney, Dobby and even Hagrid! We’ve made Marauder’s maps, wands, tiny potion jewelry and our own Mandrakes.
I am so excited to meet and create with your students on Outschool.
