Amidst the chaos for World War 1, Englishman Gustav Holst created an enormous seven part orchestral work inspired by his newfound love of astrology. Each of the seven movements features one of the planets that could be viewed from Earth at the time (Pluto had yet to be discovered.) The music would inspire generations of composers, including those who wrote for famous science fictions movies. Through an engaging lecture and listening examples, we will discover the history of the work, learn about the composer, and experience highlights of the entire suite. Students are encouraged to offer thoughts and questions about what they hear. No prior experience is needed, but students are encouraged to listen to samples of each part of the suite before class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello parents,
I teach music classes for all ages, many of which can be taken without prior music experience. I also offer math tutoring and in the future hope to offer creative writing classes. Before coming to Outschool, I taught general music and band in public schools, as well as tutoring students in math and language arts.
I hold a master's degree in music composition, and a bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. For over twenty years I have written music for a variety of instruments and genres. I have also been a regular performer in classical, rock, blues, and jazz bands as a tubist, trombonist, and bass guitarist.
Former principals have described me as "awesome" and "a blessing" to my students, and I always strive to create a learning environment where they feel supported, safe, and happy.
Besides music, my hobbies include video games and writing fiction. I even wrote a fantasy novel ten years ago!
