In this 10-week course we will read analyze and discuss the classic story, Charlotte's Web, as we explore the true meaning of friendship together. This course is ideal for 2nd to 4th grade level English language learners.

If you like adventure and quality, classic literature, this class is for you! We will be reading Charlotte's Web outside of class and analyzing the story together in class. This multi-day literature class will meet for the fall semester to develop all key English Literature skills for 3rd grade including (but not limited to): CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.2 Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3 Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events Craft and Structure: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.5 Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza; describe how each successive part builds on earlier sections. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.6 Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.7 Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting)
I am a certified teacher who has 7 years of experience in the classroom, both in public school and in a classical school. I have 6 years of experience homeschooling. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Library Media Science Education.
Outside reading is required for this class. 1-2 chapters will be covered in each class period. Comprehension questions will also be completed. There are several quizzes and a final test to be completed at home. There will be optional enrichment activities to deepen understanding of the story, most of which will involve writing. Depending on how swiftly a student works, the outside work should be completed by most students in 1-1.5 hours for each class meeting.

Informal assessment will be completed throughout the course and there will also be quizzes and a final test.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Animals are used for food and some animal characters die in the story. It is all within the gentle context of that story.
