Class Mini: The Scientific Method - Pursuing a Science Fair Project- 6th-8th

This 30-minute mini-class will introduce 6th-8th grade students to some of the history behind the Scientific Method and some of the steps of the science fair process.

Students will be asked to individually continue to develop their science fair ideas and be prepared to bring them to the single session.
Assessment
Students will be informally assessed on the strength of their selected science fair topic with respect to its ability to conform to the scientific method.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
What will be taught? Students will learn a few details of what the Scientific Method is and how it came to be used as the standard for science experimentation. This class mini session will also address some of the required steps of the scientific method in preparation for a science fair.
How will I teach? I will present material that the students will be asked to verify their comprehension with oral and written reviews. Students will be allowed to not only initiate conversations with the teacher, but collaborate with their peers.
Required experience of background knowledge? No required experience of background knowledge is required before enrolling in this single session class.
Late enrollments: Because this is a class mini session class, if a student misses enrollment in a current class, they can enroll in the next class being offered.

Recall basic facts and concepts presented.
Explain ideas or concepts.
Use information learned to create a potential science fair project idea.
Draw connections among ideas-Organize steps to their science fair project idea.
Justify a stand or decision-Critique their educated guess about what will happen in the project.
Produce new or original work-Consider the science fair topic they have chosen as a foundation for enrolling in the mini-course.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Parents will be asked to assist with any part of the future project such as purchasing supplies with the student. However, the science fair project should be independently completed by the student when the student enrolls in a future course.

A one-page review sheet will be provided before class. It will be completed during class.
