Class Experience

Welcome to the Science of Emotions!
This is an introductory class to my 6 part class on emotions.

After this class, you can choose my multi-day curriculum.
1. How emotions are made
2. Fear and Surprise
3. Sadness and Love
4. Shame and Empathy
5. Anger and Disgust
6. Hope and Curiosity

In this class:
The journey begins with "balance". Everything that we do is so we can feel balanced and healthy. Imagine using your emotions as data, so you can stay balanced. That's called emotional intelligence.

We will define "emotional intelligence", also known as EQ. EQ means being smart about your emotions, using the emotion to make good decisions.

Emotional intelligence is a very beneficial skill and helps with maintaining a healthy balance. Emotional intelligence is valued in schools and businesses.

Then we learn about what are the basics of our emotions. How do we define emotions, and what is the point of these states?

We review the expressions on our faces, and how these faces convey the emotions we feel inside.

Because emotions have levels of intensity, we need to build a better emotional vocabulary. I will illustrate this using the app called, the mood meter.
(You do NOT need to buy the Mood Meter for this class)

All that is required is for students to come to class prepared to learn about their emotions, and how they can use that energy for better decision-making. This class is taught using a powerpoint presentation. It is a participative class, and students are encouraged to engage and ask question. I ask the students many questions in return.

I am very energetic and lively, students are able to pick it up and ride my energy with a smile. Always with a smile.
Learning Goals
Emotions exist in 100% of human beings. It is tethered in everything we do.
Students will recognize:
1. Success in life is about finding balance. To achieve this balance, it is important to train ourselves to identify our own emotions.

Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Concordia University
Hi, I'm Rob!

As an actor and traveler, I have been swimming in the world of emotions.

After I earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology, I started teaching High School in Montreal, Canada. While I was teaching, I dedicated some time to learn acting. I studied many characters, and I learned to uncover their intentions, motivations, and the emotions that power their behaviors.

Years later, I decided to continue my teaching journey in Thailand. I lived there for 2 years as a grade 4 ESL teacher. This began a new adventure and a new discovery of myself. I've lived in places like Vietnam, Malta, Ireland, Spain, Greece, Morocco, and Cyprus.

Now I combine what I learned in school with life's adventure and my new mission is to teach young minds about emotional intelligence. The ability to bring awareness to emotional states is a survival skill. I teach what emotions are, the biology of emotions, and how they are made.

(Please note, I would like to specify that the students WILL NOT share anything personal about their emotional experiences in any therapeutic way. This is a class designed to construct their ideas about emotions, not to evaluate their emotions)

Developing emotional intelligence is key to survival.

I approach teaching emotions through the lens of a constructivist, where our emotions are developed by our past experiences. Naturally, I apply the same philosophy in teaching, where knowledge is constructed and the students create their own learning by applying the concepts to their individual experiences. Concepts of emotions can be too vast and vague, so I use stories from books or movies to help form more concrete understandings.

I hope to normalize a discussion about emotions, and I hope students walk away from this class with an awareness of emotional intelligence.
