"Play is one of the most important ways in which young children gain essential knowledge and skills." ~UNICEF, 2018 Pair this class with "Preschool Circle Time: Alphabet Day" that meets on Thursdays. WHAT IS CIRCLE TIME? Circle Time is a common preschool classroom activity that develops skills and relationships at the same time. Through a routine of singing together, stretching, going over the calendar, and sharing books and favorite toys — in English — the teacher and learners all get to...
This class sets a positive association with speaking and reading in English. After 6-weeks of attendance, learners will 1) be comfortable using the words, phrases, and concepts they have learned in class and 2) be in the habit of reading daily with a grownup.
> ESL Ms. Christina began her career as an English teacher in Taiwan. > EARLY LITERACY She worked for seven years in the children's department of a large public library with a focus on Early Literacy and multilingual programming. > EDUCATION Ms. Christina has a Bachelor of Arts degree in INTERNATIONAL POLITICS and GERMAN and a Master of Arts degree in INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS with a language focus on MANDARIN CHINESE.
Homework Offered
The homework is to read one book together with a grownup, then read the book to a pet or a stuffed animal. Bonus for uploading a photo to the classroom message board. During my early literacy training at the public library, I learned an incredible fact: If a grownup reads to a child every day for just 20 minutes — basically one book a day — the child will hear 1.8 million words in one year. Therefore, Ms. Christina wants each learner to read together with a grown-up every day, a book of their choice in any language — it can even be the same book every day! Then read that book to a pet or stuffed animal so the child can practice without pressure, and even pretend to be the teacher. How fun! Not only will this daily reading habit expose the learner to an incredible number of words, it will instill in them a lifelong love of reading. With reading being the cornerstone of all subsequent learning, the daily reading habit is the simplest, least expensive way to set your child up for a lifetime of success and joy.Assessments Offered

1 file available upon enrollmentLearners should bring a shaker (rattle, shaky egg, maraca, or canister with dried rice, beans, or beads inside) and a book they love—any book in any language. Bonus: Bring a calendar they can write on when we check off today's date.
1) Please be available to "unmute" your learner for their turn to speak, if they cannot "unmute" themselves. 2) Model good classroom behavior from just off-camera. If your child sees you moving and singing along, they will be more willing to participate as well. 3) Please *turn on notifications for classroom posts* to stay informed — this is where I post the daily summary of points for you to reinforce and important schedule announcements.
