Class Experience

This is Book 7 of "The Last Kids on Earth" series. The full title is: "The Last Kids on Earth and The Doomsday Race." The book is written by Max Brallier and illustrated by Douglas Holgate.

This is a fun and exciting story about a 13-year old boy named Jack who creates a team consisting of his best friend - Quint, his pet monster - Rover, the school bully - Dirk, his crush - Jane, and a menagerie of good monsters who are determined to prevent a villain named Rezzoch from taking over and ultimately destroying earth. Join us on this fun and funny journey and let's see if they can take them on!

Description by the author on Amazon:

"The highly-anticipated seventh book in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling series, with over 7 million copies in print!

"Terrifyingly fun! Delivers big thrills and even bigger laughs.”—Jeff Kinney, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Diary of a Wimpy Kid

With his zombie-controlling powers growing stronger, Jack Sullivan and his buddies are road-tripping toward the mysterious Tower, where they must once and for all stop Rezzoch the Ancient, Destructor of Worlds, from descending upon our dimension. But their journey is sidetracked when they are swept up by the Mallusk, an enormous centipede monster carrying the world's largest shopping mall on its back.

On board, the kids discover a thriving monster society: Mallusk City! There, they encounter old allies—as well as old foes, who are ruling over Mallusk City with an iron fist. Beating these bad guys in battle is not an option, but beating them in an election is… so Jack runs for mayor of Mallusk City! At first, proving his leadership skills just means shaking monster hands, kissing monster babies, and promising to fill the water fountains with strawberry Nesquik. But when the Mallusk falls under attack, Jack must learn how to be a true leader—before it’s too late.

Told in a mixture of text and illustrations, this is the perfect series for any kid who's ever dreamed of starring in their own comic book or video game."

I will read aloud this exciting New York Times bestseller as I screen share it on the class, if the students desire. Some students prefer to have their own copy of the book instead. This will allow learners to see the illustrations throughout as the story is read. Additionally, if the learner/s choose to, we can take turns reading.

As with my previous reading classes, through experience, I've realized that some days we'll get through lots of chapters, while other days we only get through a few; due to chapter length or discussion. There are 25 chapters in this book, therefore the desired schedule breakdown is as follows:

Week 1: Chapters 1-5
Week 2: Chapters 6-10
Week 3: Chapters 11-15
Week 4: Chapters 16-20
Week 5: Chapters 21-25

After each chapter is read, I will engage the learners in a brief discussion about the chapter. Learners are encouraged to give their thoughts and/or opinions during discussion time. They may also draw if they choose, while listening to the reading.

Parental Guidance
Parents: please be advised this book contains crazy made up monsters and zombies, and there are illustrations of them in the book. I do not find them inappropriate or scary, but please be aware, as each child has their own sensitivities.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Cynthia Giannone. I am Cindy to my students. In 2014 I graduated summa cum laude with my Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, with a concentration in Counter-Terrorism. I am a mom of two teens; a boy and a girl. I have home-schooled them since preschool. In addition, I currently work as an online ESL teacher. I teach children from ages 4-18. I love teaching children of all ages. My focus is on making the classes fun and interesting.

Previously, I worked over a decade as a Conflict Resolution Supervisor for a major company, and I spent almost 7 years working as a makeup artist while managing a modeling agency.

I am passionate about many things, but these days I am hyper-focused on the safety of children while online. My degree is in Criminal Investigations. I have become all too familiar with the dangers of being online. I believe it is critical that kids are aware of those dangers, what to look for, and how to protect themselves and remain safe.

Others things that I really enjoy are cooking easy, healthy, tasty meals - and teaching kids how to do the same. I also enjoy makeup, reading, Pinterest, and playing card games.

My teaching philosophy is that all children learn in their own way, at their own pace. My goal is to tailor my teaching to each child. When teaching in groups, I use a variety of different techniques to ensure that I do my best to reach all types of learners in my class. I demonstrate what I'm teaching, I ask questions to check for understanding, and above all, I listen. Learning should be fun and interesting. Those are my goals for each and every class.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile. I hope to see your child/children in one of my classes.
