BS Degree in English Education, 30+ years teaching experience, former homeschool mom/loving Nana
Student are expected to have their own copy of The Last Battle (CS Lewis), and should read or listen to the assigned chapters each week.
The overarching theme of the Narnia stories is the triumph of good over evil. There is hopefulness throughout, but dark elements exist. This story contains elements of deception and misuse of power. There are occasional descriptions of battle scenes, death, and darkly menacing creatures. Parents are encouraged to verify that the books are suitable for their learners. I welcome any messages with questions or concerns.

NOTE: In accordance with Outschool policy, we will not be specifically examining any biblical allusions or allegories found in the work. Similarly, we will also not be examining the debate surrounding whether or not the land of Calormen was intended as an allusion to Arab or Middle Eastern cultures. If a student brings up either issue in class (biblical allusions or potential racism), I am prepared to acknowledge that there continues to be serious discussion of both of these things in most scholarly studies of Lewis' works.
I am also prepared, if necessary, to summarize the major claims of both sides of these discussions and allow the students a brief time to make observations, draw conclusions, and discuss their opinions. But the focus of our study will always remain on the elements of fantasy and adventure in these plots, the author's masterful use of descriptive imagery, the well developed characters, and how the themes of friendship, courage, and hope can still relate to us today.
