In this one time class we will read the Christmas classic, The Nutcracker! The book is beautifully illustrated by Valeria Docampo and based on the New York City Ballet's production of George Balanchine's version. I encourage students to bring any nutcrackers they have to class and share them, although this is completely optional and not required. We will discuss the story and imagine what we would have done if we had been transported to the Land of Sweets and met the Mouse King. There will be a craft after the story and discussion where we make our own nutcracker from a PDF that I will provide before class. If you have a nutcracker you want to bring to class to share we would love to see it! No reading is required of the student and minimal supplies are needed for the craft.
Learning Goals
Students will use their imaginations to transport themselves to the Land of Sweets and imagine what they would have done in the various scenarios throughout the book. They will build their own paper nutcracker, using their creative coloring skills and practicing their scissor and direction following skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of California Riverside
Hi! I love to teach classes that are fun and promote discussion and creativity. In all of my classes I mix critical thinking with out of the box thinking so that the kids learn something brand new! I find the best way to do this is by using books, video games, trivia and other interactive components to keep them engaged and wanting to learn.
My passion for critical thought stems from my degree in Philosophy. The integration of pop culture in my classes is rooted in a lifetime of toy collecting, video game playing, and during my time as a staff writer for an online comic book review site. Over the past five years I have created community-based, pop-up craft classes for parents and children that integrate culture and thought, and I am excited about the opportunity to share these types of activities with my students!
Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my husband, son, two cats and puppy! I love online gaming and spending a lot of time crafting.
