Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Christina Rossetti was a poet during the Victorian period. Her most famous work is a narrative poem called Globin Market, but she wrote a great many other poems too, including poems for very young children.

In the first class I'll introduce a few of Christina Rossetti's works and we'll begin talking about her life and social connections. Christina came from a very gifted family. Her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a painter and a member of a group of artists known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Her uncle was Lord Byron's traveling physician and an aunt of hers worked for Florence Nightingale. Princess Christine Bonaparte was her godmother. In the class we'll talk about her life and poetry, as well as make connections to other events and people of her time.

In the second class we will discuss some of the social and economic challenges that are touched on within her writing. We will also discuss the ways in which she promoted the rights of women while also discussing the limits to her feminism.

In the third class students we will look at the religious overtones in Rossetti's poetry. Her life was influenced by a revival of Catholicism within England. As a secular class, we'll be looking at the her religious beliefs as her religious beliefs, not attempting to promote or discourage them but simply to understand how they influenced her poetry. We'll look at some of the religious controversies of the Victorian era in a secular, academic manner.

The class will be a combination of lecture and discussion. Students will be asked to read samples of her poetry in class together, but if any student would prefer to not take a turn he or she can let me know.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a homeschooling mother of three. I have a B.A. in political theory and many years experience teaching online. I've also studied theology and written a book titled A Secular Bible Study as well as a young adult novel titled The Edge of the Circle. I teach online classes about secular Bible studies, piracy, Tudor England, and Victorian Britain.

A few years back I asked one of my sons what he wanted to do for a unit study, and he said he wanted to know more about pirates. He didn't want to know about their lifestyle but why they went to sea. That led me on a multiyear quest to learn everything I could not just about pirates but the time period they lived in, from the mid 1400s to early 1800s. Someday I'll publish the manuscript I wrote while reading about this. In the meantime, I love teaching classes on it.

I love reading. I love talking about what I've read. I love discussing the big questions that one can find buried in a children's book or underlying a piece of poetry. I want to understand the different interpretations of abstract concepts like justice and to ask why good things happen to bad people. I love to read everything I can to see how people throughout history have wrestled with the big questions.

If you're trying to figure out which of my secular Bible study classes to take, the main differences are the age range and the class format. I offer classes for younger students and for older students. I also offer multiweek classes or ongoing classes. The multiweek classes allow me to start at the beginning and proceed in a logical format, but they require a commitment from students. The ongoing classes jump around according to student requests and not everyone will have the same background knowledge. However, they do not require student commitment.

When I'm not teaching, reading, writing, or talking with my children I'm working on crafts. I like to do embroidery and beadwork. I crochet. I'm learning to sew.
