When it comes to writing, rules aren't always as cut and dry as we would like them to be. It's no wonder, then, that writing can often be tricky. Take the following scenario as an example: you're buying a bag of potatoes and you go to comment on the amount of potatoes in the bag. There are 4 total, but you expected more for a 10 pound bag. But wait! Do you say, “Wow, there aren’t much potatoes in this bag,” or “Wow, there aren’t many potatoes in this bag”? In this class, we will look at common quantifiers, like much/many, little/few, a lot/lots of, and many more. Students will be taught about the proper usage of these quantifiers, as well as tips on how to remember which word to choose when writing and speaking. We will look at different examples of countable and uncountable words in various sentences and reading excerpts, as well as practice filling in the blanks of sentences using the correct target words. Students will also create their own sentences to share with the class. At the end of class, students will be given an optional homework assignment to help them practice what they learned in class. Students, if they choose, may submit this homework to the teacher via the Outschool classroom for grading as a way to assess their learning. All in all, this class will be jam-packed with information in a highly interactive way, with the majority of the work happening in the here-and-now of the class session. By the time this class is over, students should be comfortable with common quantifiers in writing and speaking.
