Note: I have recently accepted a full-time position and now teach very few classes on Outschool. At this time, I am unable to accommodate class requests. Thank you! A class trip to the local llama farm has gone terribly wrong! You and your fellow classmates must put your heads together to solve math problems and make decisions on what actions to take in this llama-filled adventure. Will you be stuck at the farm forever as a servant to a llama master? Will you join the llamas in a quest for world domination? Will a llama become your mama? Will you gain the respect of your foes and become Llama Leader? Math, hilarity, and some truly terrible pictures of llamas will ensue as students make their way through this "llamazing" adventure. I will use a PowerPoint presentation as a base for this class, but will add photos/drawings, video clips, sound clips, realia, and some interaction with online number/dice randomizers to keep the class interactive, fun, and engaging. The math used will be taken from 3rd-5th grade math standards and may include concepts such as: place value, basic computation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) measures of center, area, perimeter and volume, measurement, and fraction and decimal computation. Students will all have an opportunity to solve problems as I give think/computation time, and I am happy to help with any questions students have to get started on solving the problems. (No student will ever be "put on the spot" so don't worry if you have a reluctant mathematician!) Even if students aren't familiar with how to solve the problem, they can still participate, learn, and have fun in this class. Every now and then the story will prompt the students to decide on what action to take- this is how they make the adventure their own! To decide on what course of action to take next, the class will vote. If we have time left at the end of class, students can retrace their steps and see what would have happened had they taken an alternate course of action, just like in traditional "Choose Your Own" books. There are no breakout groups, so the class will have my full attention at all times. I am an energetic and enthusiastic teacher, and I accommodate all learners in my classroom.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Some of the stories may take a comical turn for the worst, resulting in our character perishing, just like in traditional "Choose Your Own" books. It is always very vague - think "And the last thing you ever see is the llama hoof heading straight at you!" But this may be slightly scary for sensitive learners.
Supply List
Students will need something to use to solve problems- paper and pencil or a whiteboard and marker, for example.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
