IMAGINATIVE EXPLORATION: You find yourself in a remote jungle. What grabs your attention the most is seeing a cacao fruit hanging on a tree. You enjoy the rich and delightful taste so much that you decide to set up a chocolate factory. First, you’ll discover the process to transform the cacao fruit into a chocolate drink, or better still, a chocolate bar. You ask for help from jungle animals. You could use anteaters to clean the inside of the fruit, parrots to peel the beans and snakes as conveyor belts to transport the products to different stations. The possibilities are endless! We will brainstorm many ideas and find the right words especially adjectives to describe the chocolate-making process and the role the animal helpers play in it. At the end, we will draw our perfectly peculiar chocolate factory. You talented writers have become "Chocolatiers, on the frontiers of innovation." 🐯🌳🦧🐍🦜🦥 Day 1: Setting the scene. Describing and sequencing the chocolate-making process. Modeled writing. Students will be shown pictures of the chocolate-making process, and as a group, will find the words to describe it. Day 2: Imagining the animal helpers at work and writing about their contributions. Individual writing. Students are invited to write in a more relaxed way, where their imagination motivates them to write freely. I will look over their writing to help them express their ideas clearly. Day 3: Individual presentations on our “jungle factory” and our written work. Students will write a short description of their finished product and can then promote it to the group. (Costumes and props are welcome.) Writing fueled by imagination is so much fun!

🌍 MS. KARIN
I was born in Toronto, Canada into a Colombian-Armenian family. Multiculturalism is part of me. I speak English, Spanish, French and Armenian. I have lived in nine countries. For the last ten years, I have taught children in a variety of contexts, namely: a bilingual international school (Bogota, Colombia), a pioneer Waldorf school (Lake Atitlan, Guatemala), a homeschooling collective (Corsica, France) and online (with China). I graduated with an Honours BSc degree in Medical & Environmental Sciences from Queen's University, Canada. I have a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and Young Learners (CELTA-YL). I am a certified Waldorf teacher for grades 1 to 8. In addition, I am a Tai Chi practitioner, a Pilates instructor and I love to dance. I like exploring different forms of artistic expression including watercolour painting, poetry, theater, photography, Blender 3D and Photoshop. I believe in the importance of encouraging children to develop their creativity through a variety of art mediums.
My goal with each course will be to awaken the students’ curiosity. Through interdisciplinary learning, I show students the connections between multiple subjects in order to widen their perspectives and allow them to develop a deeper understanding. The class material comes alive with storytelling which is sometimes based on personal experiences from faraway places, be it in India, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, East Timor, Bali, Peru or California.
