50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class students will learn about Photosynthesis in a new a creative way: by making cake pops! We will use cookies as the basis to understand how taking basic elements (water, sun, and carbon dioxide... or in other words pre-made cookies, chocolate chips, and cream cheese) to make sugar and oxygen (a finished cake pop and a smile). The lesson will start out with an introduction on plants. This will include how they harvest energy from the sun and other resources (like water and carbon dioxide) to make oxygen and sugar. and how this is the building block of all life on earth. This will include an interactive slide show using Nearpod. We will then discuss how photosynthesis is simply a way of taking atoms and re-ordering them to make something different, much like recycling, and much like photosynthesis does with the elements. To demonstrate this, we will take ingredients and "re-order" them to something different-- a cake pop. The recipe will be taken from this website: https://mycrashtestlife.com/2019/12/22/4-ingredient-cookie-pops-easy/
Learning Goals
By the end of this lesson students will have a basic understanding of Photosynthesis in plants, and how they re-arrange molecules to create different by-products.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
I am in love with biology and teach it in a variety of classes including General Biology, Botany, Entomology, Ecology & the Environment, and Indoor Gardening. I received a B.S. degree in Environmental Science from Brigham Young University, as well as a M.S. degree in Biology (also from BYU) with an emphasis in Plant Genetics. In addition, I also teach Arabic writing, language and cultural classes. I grew up in Saudi Arabia, speak the language, and Im in love with the Arab world. I have taught children and youth in all backgrounds and all ages over the past 14 years.
I believe that in order for teaching to be effective, it has to be fun. I love to involve students. In my biology courses I do this by having hands-on experiments, keeping a science journal, and giving them time outside of classes to spend time with nature. For Arabic, I involved students with giving them time to practice their conversation skills! I also am a firm believer that we humans learn by repetition, so I try to incorporate principles we learn from previous classes throughout our course to help solidify their learning.
Fun facts about me? My mother is Polynesian, my dad is American, and (like I mentioned above) I grew up in Saudi Arabia! I am in love with the Middle East, and really people of all ethnic backgrounds. This is manifest by the fact that I have an obsession with travelling. I have been to every continent (minus Antarctica) and am always excited to learn more about people and cultures of the world.
