Dive into the rich history of China while building your Mandarin skills! In this Chinese History Through Mandarin class for learners ages 14-18, students will explore significant historical events, figures, and cultural milestones in Chinese history while practicing listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Mandarin. This class is designed to help learners improve their language proficiency through engaging historical content, providing both language immersion and a cultural deep dive.

Each session will cover a different period of Chinese history, from ancient dynasties to modern times, with a focus on key vocabulary, cultural insights, and historical narratives that shape the China we know today.

What Will Be Taught?

Learners will explore Chinese history through the lens of language, covering major events and historical figures while building their Mandarin proficiency. 

Topics include:
- The Qin Dynasty (秦朝 Qíncháo) – Explore the unification of China under Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the construction of the Great Wall, and the creation of China's first centralized government.
- The Han Dynasty (汉朝 Hàncháo) – Learn about the Silk Road, Confucianism, and key advancements in Chinese culture.
- The Tang Dynasty (唐朝 Tángcháo) – Discover the golden age of Chinese poetry, art, and diplomacy.
- The Song Dynasty (宋朝 Sòngcháo) – Discuss technological innovations such as printing and gunpowder.
- The Ming Dynasty (明朝 Míngcháo) – Explore maritime voyages led by Zheng He and the building of the Forbidden City.
- The Qing Dynasty (清朝 Qīngcháo) – Learn about the fall of the last imperial dynasty and the rise of modern China.
- The Republic of China (中华民国 Zhōnghuá Mínguó) – Discuss the early 20th-century reforms and struggles for modernization.

How Is the Class Structured?

Each 45-minute session will follow a structured format to maximize engagement and language learning:

- Welcome & Warm-Up (5-10 minutes): Greet learners, review key vocabulary, and introduce the historical theme of the session.
- Historical Lesson (20-25 minutes): Discuss the historical event, figure, or period, incorporating relevant Mandarin vocabulary and cultural insights.
- Interactive Activity (10-15 minutes): Engage learners in activities such as reading historical texts, debating historical interpretations, or creating timelines in Mandarin.
- Wrap-Up & Homework Assignment (5 minutes): Review key points, assign a reflection or writing task, and encourage further research.

Prerequisite

This is an advanced Mandarin class designed for learners who have completed intermediate-level language classes. Learners should be able to:

- Recognize and write characters used in everyday conversation.
- Understand and respond to questions in Mandarin.
- Read and comprehend short passages in Mandarin.

Completion of both beginner and intermediate-level Mandarin classes is required to ensure learners are well-prepared for this advanced class.

This class will be taught entirely in Mandarin, providing a full immersion experience. Learners will engage in listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities in Mandarin, with English support provided if necessary to clarify complex vocabulary or instructions.
