Are you ready to become a penguin expert? Then this class is for YOU! In this class we will be learning fun facts about penguins from written facts & a few videos, while also learning how to use graphic organizers to record our research. In addition, I will be leading a directed drawing of a penguin that we will label. This lesson will help your student become a rockstar researcher, which will help them write amazing non-fiction stories. At the end of our lesson, there will be a quick quiz to test their penguin knowledge! For this class, it is best that your student is able to write independently. I will be guiding our writing so they don't have to do it alone, but we will be moving quickly! Lesson Outline: At the beginning of class, the focus animal (penguin) will be introduced to the student. Together, the teacher and student will brainstorm what they already know about penguins and what they would like to know about penguins. The teacher will read facts about penguins, with a few videos and pictures to supplement the facts being presented. We will then use the penguin fact sheet page provided in the materials to fill out three facts they learned about penguins from the non-fiction story. The facts could be where penguins live, what they eat, what they look like, and any additional information they learned about penguins. Students will then join the teacher to draw and label a picture of a penguin. A penguin drawing page will be provided, but not required. They may use blank drawing paper if needed. The students may color their penguin at the end of class! To end the lesson, students will work together to become a penguin fact finder with a penguin trivia game. The teacher will asks the students questions by displaying the questions on the computer screen, and the students will respond to the trivia question! Assistance will be provided to students as needed.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Callan, and I am so excited that you are here! I earned my Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in Elementary Education from Texas A&M University. I am certified to teach early childhood through 6th grade in all subject areas. I also have an ESL certification (English as a Second Language) for grades K-6.
I taught 1st grade in the brick & mortar classroom for three years (all subject areas) before taking time off to travel for my husband's job. Being a classroom teacher allowed me to work with many different students with many different learning styles. I have taught students in small and large group settings, and I have learned many different techniques to create a safe, comfortable, and FUN learning environment. Since leaving the brick and mortar classroom, I have been looking for a way to get back to teaching, and I am so glad I came across Outschool! I hope that you will join me for one of my classes to say hello and to learn many fun things! See you there!!!
