1 live meeting
30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Class will start with a very brief outline of the basic rules and objectives of a few of our favorite chess variants including Horde, Crazy House, and Atomic. Then we login to our accounts at lichess.org where we will have plenty of time for live games with some light coaching and lots of encouragement. The main focus is to have fun and to stimulate a deeper interest in chess. Good sportsmanship will be emphasized. Students should not take this class unless they are VERY comfortable with standard chess and proficient in the use of lichess.org or other online chess platforms. I offer several classes in standard chess that are a much better place to start. What is a chess variant? A chess variant is a game related to, derived from, or inspired by chess. We will focus on variants that reinforce the basics of real chess and encourage some creative thinking that can enliven your student's chess development. All of my group classes are not set up as recurring/subscription. You can sign up for the same class any number of times. I know it can be a hassle to enroll every week but many of my students and families like the drop in structure. Some take the same class every week, others come 2 or 3 times each week, and some just drop in occasionally. I post my schedule at least a month in advance so it is possible to book several classes at once.

Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Boston University
When school went remote in March of 2020 my chess club (where I taught full time) thrived. This led to curriculum development, program development, and coaching work at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, SciGenius, BudBe, Zinkers, and the Chicago Chess Foundation. Before that I taught for three years at the Berkeley Chess School.
Chess is on the cutting edge of a shift toward globally connected, self directed, and play oriented education. I am thrilled to be part of it. As a self taught player currently rated over 2000 I have become an expert in using the most advanced learning tools available to bring lessons to life. I love helping young people discover and excel at this beautiful game.
