In this class, the students will get to participate in a chess tournament in which we will have a winner at the end of the class. Preassigned matchups are randomly made and each pair of students will be in their own breakout room. The games played are either going to be 10 minute or 5 minute games (10 or 5 min in each player's clock), depending on the size of the tournament. The people who lose and get eliminated have the choices of either leaving or staying and playing games with the other eliminated students or solve chess puzzles with me in the main room. The final matchup takes place in the main room and one participant of the final shares their screen for everybody to watch. **IMPORTANT** Please make sure that you have created a chess.com account prior to the start of the tournament and generally know how to navigate it. Failure to make one before class could potentially result in elimination. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello Outschoolers! My name is Michael Siokis and I am currently a student at the University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in Neuroscience (pre-med track) and minoring in mathematics. I love to teach chess, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and basketball! In my years of high school, I tutored, both officially and unofficially, Honors Biology, AP Biology, Algebra II, Calculus and Honors Chemistry. I was also an intern at a Johns Hopkins researcher lab where I helped with research regarding PPA (primary proggresive aphasia).
As you can already tell, I am very passionate about science. The reason does not rely entirely on the fact that science is interesting to the type of person I am, but also because I have had some amazing science teachers throughout the years. They had many things in common, they knew the material well, they cared about the students, but most importantly, they were engaging, and that is what I strive to do when I teach. Additionally, I believe that it is my duty to give attention to mental health when I teach, so if you are a student and you want to talk with someone, you can always message me.
