Each class will begin with 5 - 10 tactical problems chosen by theme and rating level optimized for the individual student. We talk through each puzzle and work through variations together on my shared screen. Next we review a very short (5-15 moves) game that illustrates more strategic ideas like development of pieces, control of the center, king safety, common openings, etc. Both the tactical and strategic lessons are delivered in a fun and encouraging question and answer style. I am a teacher with 20 years of classroom experience. My chess.com rating is 2060. I have been teaching chess for 8 years, formerly at the Berkeley Chess School, currently at the Center for Talented Youth at John Hopkins University and at Christopher House Elementary in Chicago.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
If your student regularly plays online or in person games you will watch their chess rating climb.
