Class Experience

Dear Parents and Learners!

Thank you for your interest in my chess class.

This introductory class is welcome to all learners who wish to learn about chess, who already know the rules of the game and wants to further improve their game play. Pawns are considered to be one of the most immobile piece in chess because it cannot move backward and cannot attack in the same way that it moves. For this reason pawn structures can often determine the opening position or even our strategy.

In each class, we will review and learn at least 3 pawn structures/themes, how they can appear in different part of the game and how we can combine them with other pieces. In the end we will always finish with a game. Depending on the game, the class might go slightly overtime. Students who finished their game can choose to stay to watch other games.

The goal of this class is for student to improve their pawn structures by understanding them and knowing how to use them in combination with other pieces. By the end of the classes, students should be able to analyze their pawn structures and weaknesses in their opponent's game. I highly recommend having a chessboard and chess pieces. For the class, I will be using an online platform as well to make sure that everyone can follow at the same time. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to communicate with me.
For the games, we will be using Lichess.org. If you already have an account, please make sure to be signed in. Otherwise you can still play but your game will be anonymous and will not be saved.

Warmly,

Louisa

Supply List
We will be using some screen sharing. If your learner is not familiar with the notation in chess, please make sure that he/she has access to the drawing feature in Zoom. This will allow the student to demonstrate the move on the screen.

We might play a game in the end using the platform Chessonlinefree. This website should not track your data. Depending on your browser, I would recommend to have an add blocker to avoid distraction.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I played chess throughout my childhood and I wish to introduce my passion to young learners. I played competitively in Canada for many years, notably at the Canadian Youth Chess Championship and had the chance to represent my country in international competitions such as the World Youth Chess Championship. I think this game is a fun way to develop strategies, analysis, planning, empathy and most importantly, make friends with others and the self.
