What's included

5 live meetings
6 hrs 15 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be encouraged to play games on their free time and to share with me if they have any questions or need feedback.

Class Experience

Each class will consist of 2 parts. I will do an instructional lesson for the first half to present the ideas and topics for the lesson. This will be followed by students playing live games with instructor supervision and coaching to practice what they have learned in a game situation.

Please note that we will not be using any physical chess boards in this class. All lessons and games will be played online through the chess.com website, so there are some technical aspects to the class, including creating a chess.com account that will require preparation from your end.

Below is a rough breakdown of the topics that will be covered each week:

Week 1: Piece movements (accompanied by stories and characters I've developed over the years to keep the instruction interesting and keep students engaged).
Week 2: Check and checkmate
Week 3: Stalemate, castling, en passant, piece values
Week 4: Beginner endgame strategy
Week 5: Scholar's Mate (beginner opening attack)
Learning Goals
By the end of the course, students should be able to know all the rules of chess and be able to play a complete game from beginning to end. This includes understanding special circumstances such as castling, en passant, and stalemate.
