What's included

Class Experience

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Write and balance chemical equations from narrative descriptions of chemical reactions

Skills required:
Students will be most successful in this class if they are familiar with going between chemical names and formulas for ionic and covalent compounds. I will include a review sheet of this in the first week that students can reference if needed.

Course syllabus:
--Week 1--
* Video 1: Anatomy of a chemical equation
* Video 2: Writing chemical equations from narrative descriptions of chemical reactions
* Practice worksheet: Going between chemical equations and descriptions of chemical reactions
* Video 3: Solutions and explanations of practice worksheet (sent to students after they post their work in the classroom or send to instructor)

--Week 2--
* Video 1: Conservation of mass- why does balancing matter?
* Video 2: PhET simulation of balancing equations
* Video 3: Basics of balancing
*Practice worksheet: Balancing simple chemical equations
* Video 4: Solutions and explanations of practice worksheet (sent to students after they post their work in the classroom or send to instructor)

--Week 3--
* Video 1: Expert tips and tricks for balancing
* Video 2: Challenging examples of balancing equations
* Practice worksheet: Balancing more challenging chemical equations
* Video 3: Solutions and explanations of practice worksheet (sent to students after they post their work in the classroom or send to instructor)

--Week 4--
* Video 1: Practical applications and real world examples of balancing reactions
* Practice worksheet: Real life balancing problems
* Video 2: Solutions and explanations of practice worksheet (sent to students after they post their work in the classroom or send to instructor)

There will be an optional (parent-graded) quiz offered at the end of the course.

Course expectations:
This is a flexible schedule course, meaning that there are no live meetings. Each week, you will watch the videos (via unlisted YouTube link which will be posted in the classroom) and work through the practice problems. Once you have completed the practice problems, you will upload a photo or scan of your answers to either the classroom (preferred) or directly message it to the instructor. There will be a weekly thread where you can post videos or photos or messages asking for help on the practice problems- students are encouraged to help each other, and the instructor will check in daily to answer questions as well. This is not the kind of course where you can sit and watch the videos and learn- you should be working through the practice problems each week in order to get the most benefit out of the course.
The instructor will always be available via message and will typically reply within 24 hours. I am also willing to set up office hours via Zoom video chat if they are requested by a section of the class.

Parental Guidance
Links to unlisted YouTube videos will be used to deliver instructor-created course content. This does not require any registration or account. A link to a PhET simulation from the University of Colorado Boulder (https://phet.colorado.edu/) will be used for one of the activities. If you do not wish to use the PhET simulation, please contact me and I can provide an alternative activity.
Supply List
PDF files of all course materials are provided by the teacher. Some students may wish to print out the worksheets each week, but they can be copied into a notebook if printing is not available.

I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with almost two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and four years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never-ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
