Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 11
Beginner - Advanced Level
This ongoing course provides a great foundation for the grade 9-11 chemistry curriculum.
We will start by introducing atom structure, elements, compounds, ions, isotopes, valence electrons, naming compounds, and types of bonds.
We will then have a brief look at the types of reactions, and the law of conservation of mass. we will spend time practicing balancing and predicting the products of chemical reactions.
For the second part of the course, I will teach moles/mass/molecular mass/Avogadro number concepts, calculating ratio and molar/mass relation in chemical reactions.

Students will be provided with practice questions and homework activities to facilitate the learning process.
Students will have an opportunity to present their work.
I will teach using a whiteboard, some short YouTube videos, and worksheets. Frontal teaching will be followed by practice periods (worksheet uploaded for each session). Students are encouraged to share their answers and participate in discussions.

Course outline:
Week 1 - Atom structure, atomic number, mass, periodic table
Week 2 - periods, groups, valence electrons, ionic compounds, Lewis structure
Week 3 - rules for naming compounds, molecular compounds, factors in the chemical reaction, conservation of the mass law
Week 4 - learning check, synthesis reactions, predicting products of synthesis reactions
Week 5 - decomposition reactions, predicting products, single displacement reactions
Week 6 - double displacement, combustion, and neutralization reactions, review of the chemistry part I
week 7- introducing the concept of mole and Avogadro number, practice questions
week 8 - introducing molar mass, practicing converting amount to mass, mass to number of particles
week 9 - introducing percentage composition in the chemical formula, empirical and molecular formula
week10 - calculation of limiting and excess reactants, production yield

I am always happy to answer questions during and after the session. Welcome to my chemistry class!
