In this exciting discussion-based and hands-on course, learners will explore the basic principals of chemistry. This course that will cover chemistry at the high school level so that a learner can complete a full year of high school chemistry. Learners will be able to participate in a live lessons, share ideas, and ask questions. Learners will be able to complete up to eight hands-on laboratory activities. Additionally the course will have useful and demonstrative videos, helpful practice problems, and live demonstration labs. Each session will discuss a different and interesting topic of chemistry allowing for learners to choose one or all classes. Specifically, leaners will explore general areas of chemistry. Here is a brief schedule of each week. Fall/Winter 2024 (14 weeks) Week of Sep 9: What chemistry is & how if affects everything! Additionally, one week prior to each class a detailed daily class supply list, based on master supply list, will be provided. Learners will be able to interact and collaborate ideas with classmates during the class. Each will be encouraged to fully participate in each day's experiment.
Learning Goals
Homework: Approximately, 30-45 min of homework is assigned each week. Homework completion is OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED for all learners. Specifically, learners desiring to receive a grade must complete all homework..
Optional chapter assessments with key (test) will provided for the learner.
Other Details
Supply List
Cost for materials is $50-60 - the labware and tools are a one time cost. The same labware is reused in this class. Thus, the cost is spread out over the whole school year if you choose to remained enrolled. A detailed supply list is provided in the classroom once enrolled. Other materials: -Notebook, if not taking notes on a device -Calculator -Pencils
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Optional Textbook: Chemistry- Prentice Hall ISBN-13: 978-0132512107 or ISBN-10: 0132512106
If the parent desires their learner to complete the optional tests, the textbook is a highly recommended resource, as all test will derived to that resource.
Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Science from University of Alabama
Bachelor's Degree in Science from University of South Carolina
I am a middle school and high school math and science teacher with 12 years of experience. Additionally, I am a homeschooling dad of 16 years who has four kids that are four different types of learners.
I have the privilege to teach many subject areas, but chemistry is my favorite as it applies to all other areas of science. My opinion is that if a student understands major chemical concepts, other sciences become more clear.
I hold a MS and BS in the natural sciences.
