In this exciting class learners will explore the basic principals of chemistry. This class is Part 2 of 4 that will cover chemistry at the high school level so that a learner can complete a full year of chemistry. Learners will be able to view recording lessons, interact with me during the week in a discussion groups, ask & answer questions, and share ideas. Additionally the course will have useful and demonstrative videos, review materials, and helpful practice problems.

Below are a few items to help you all navigate the class.

Video Lessons - Each lesson contains 2-4 short videos that will guide you through the topic and chapter each lesson. The video lessons are based on a textbook, Chemistry- Prentice Hall ISBN-13: 978-0132512107 or ISBN-10: 0132512106. If you plan to complete the homework and take the test, I would recommend purchasing the textbook

Homework - There are optional homework assignments for each week or chapter. The homework allows you to simply answer the questions and submit when done. The purpose of homework is to help you learn and master the material. Homework is optional. You can use the textbook and videos to complete the homework. Answers are provided for you after you complete and submit.

Test - Tests are provided and are optional. An answer key is provided so that you or your parent/adult can check the answers.

If you have a question or need some extra help, I am here for you! You can use the classroom chat and I will respond within 24 hrs, but likely the same day. Sometimes I can respond to your question via a short video.

Lesson 1:
Ions and Bonds
Chemical bonds are the tiny glue holding our world together! Atoms share or steal electrons in a tug-of-war, forming strong covalent or ionic bonds that create molecules and compounds.
1 assignment
49 mins of video lessons
Lesson 2:
Covalent Bonds
Sharing is caring! In covalent bonds, atoms become BFFs by sharing electrons, achieving a stable outer shell (the octet rule). This electron sharing creates strong bonds in many molecules like water (H₂O).
1 assignment
50 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Chemical Names and Formulas
Crack the code of chemistry! Formulas (H₂O for water!) tell you the exact number of atoms in a molecule, while names (like sodium chloride for NaCl) are the secret language to identify them. Learn to translate - it's chemistry magic!
1 assignment
68 mins of video lessons
Lesson 4:
Chemical Quantities
Imagine a recipe for reactions! In chemistry, quantities like moles tell you exactly how much of each ingredient (elements/compounds) you need to follow the recipe perfectly. No more guessing games - it's all about ratios to make precise predictions!
1 assignment
70 mins of video lessons

Bachelor's Degree in Science from University of South Carolina
I am a middle school and high school math and science teacher with 10+ years of experience. Additionally, I am a homeschooling dad of 16 years who has four kids that are four different types of learners.

I have the privilege to teach many subject areas, but chemistry is my favorite as it applies to all other areas of science. My opinion is that if a student understands major chemical concepts, other sciences become more clear.

I hold a MS and BS in the natural sciences.
