Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
In Chemistry 101 Flex learners will explore the beginning stages of chemistry. Each week learners will explore a different concept within chemistry building on the week before. This five-week course is designed to help learners gain a deeper understanding of the basics of chemistry by making it fun and approachable. My goal is to provide an environment that is welcoming to everyone and that allows for everyone to feel and be successful in learning chemistry.

Each week there will be a pre-recorded lesson that goes out in a post in the classroom along with assignments and challenges that help the learners build on the knowledge from the pre-recorded lesson. The challenges/practices will be assigned through Nearpod a link to the assignments will be supplied through a post in the classroom learners will click on the link and it will direct them to the activity. Even though this is a flexible schedule class and we won't have live meetings it will still be interactive and I will challenge the learners to interact with each other and with me through discussion boards, assignments, and challenges!

Week one-
Pre-recorded lesson that helps learners to explore and learn about the different atomic models, how they have changed over the years, the parts of an atom, and how we can view that information by looking at the periodic table.
They will have a fill-in-the blank worksheet to fill out while watching the pre-recorded lesson and challenges assigned through Nearpod.
Week two-
Pre-recorded lesson that allows learners to explore more about the periodic table and how it is arranged and organized and elements by coloring in the different groups of elements on the periodic table.
They will have a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to fill out while watching the pre-recorded lesson and challenges assigned through Nearpod and a challenge to play "Guess the Element" with their classmates in the classroom.
Week three-
Pre-recorded lesson that allows learners to gain an understanding of the different types of chemical bonds that form between atoms, why and how they form, and practice creating chemical bonds.
They will have a fill-in-the blank worksheet to fill out while watching the pre-recorded lesson and challenges assigned through Nearpod.
Week four-
Pre-recorded lesson will allow learners to identify how to write chemical formulas and name compounds
They will have a fill-in-the blank worksheet to fill out while watching the pre-recorded lesson and challenges assigned through Nearpod.
Week five-
Pre-recorded lesson that helps learners explore and gain an understanding of chemical reactions, the parts of a chemical reaction, the types of chemical reactions, as well as practice identifying the types of chemical reactions.
They will have a fill-in-the blank worksheet to fill out while watching the pre-recorded lesson and challenges assigned through Nearpod.

Students should have prior knowledge of addition and subtraction. Students will be evaluated throughout the course by answering essential questions, check for understanding questions, and practice problems.
Learning Goals
Learners will gain an understanding of the foundations of chemistry from atoms, the periodic table, chemical bonds, writing formulas and naming compounds, to chemical reactions!
