Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 12
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Why should you not trust an atom? Because they make up everything!

This class is designed to provide an introduction to atoms and the world of chemical compounds. Many topics will be covered over this 5 week class that will give the student a basic understanding of atoms and how they form molecules. Students will have the opportunity to practice what they learn each week.

Week 1: Matter and Atoms
-> Video: The states of matter
-> Video: Atoms and subatomic particles
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: labeling the states of matter, labeling the parts of atoms, and filling in atom models

Week 2: The Periodic Table of Element
-> Video: Discussion of the periodic table of elements
-> Video: Valence electrons, how to determine the number from the periodic table, ions, and isotopes
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: Number of valence electrons, what ion is made, and how many neutrons

Week 3: Chemical Bonding
-> Video: Covalent bonding
-> Video Ionic bonding
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: Ionic of covalent and drawing molecules

Week 4: Lewis Structures
-> Video: How to draw Lewis Structures of atoms
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for the video
-> Practice problems: drawing Lewis Structures

Week 5: Naming Molecules
-> Video: Naming ionic compounds
-> Video: Naming simple covalent molecules
-> Video: Naming hydrocarbon chains
-> Fill in the blank note sheets for each video
-> Practice problems: Name that molecule!

This is a flexible schedule course, meaning that there are no live meetings. Each week, new videos, notes pages, and practice problems will be posted to the classroom. The completed practice problems will be uploaded to the classroom (either scanned or picture taken) for feedback from the teacher. There will be a discussion thread where students can ask for help from the class and the teacher. To get the most out of this course, the teacher will provide notes pages with blanks for the students to fill in as they watch the videos. Students are expected to complete the practice problems each week as the material builds upon itself weekly.

The teacher is always be available via message (either in the classroom discussion or private message) and will typically reply within 12 hours, but never more than 24 hours unless extenuating circumstances.

Learning Goals

Students will have a basic understanding of atoms and how they form the molecules in our world. Students will be able to name simple chemical compounds and read the periodic table.
