Chatterboxes #1: The "Um Game" and Impromptu Public Speaking

Students practice impromptu public speaking skills using fun (yet challenging) games in public speaking. This class is an engaging way to learn skills for talking in front of others, whether they talk a little or a lot! #superstar

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Beginner Level
Is the term "chatterbox" a relatable term to you? Do you enjoy talking? This class takes those speaking skills and helps guide them with a fun and challenging outlet. I purposely keep this class extremely small so students get LOTS of talk time.

The class is structured to begin with a short introduction to public speaking skills and an introduction to the concept of impromptu speaking ( public speaking without preparation or practice). Every student will have multiple opportunities to "Take the Floor" during our game, aiming to avoid common key words in conversation, such as "um" and "like." It might sound easy, but when you try it, you may be surprised at how hard it can be to avoid these words as you are thinking quickly on your feet.

We will practice with short informative topics through several different types of speaking activities and prompts.

While students take their turn speaking, students will help monitor one another for "ums" and I will be looking for positive feedback.

No background is required and homework is not given...although, you just might try the game at home with your family...or try it out with others on long car rides.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to use topics and inspiration for 1 minute speeches.
Students will practice speaking with little to no preparation.

Please provide scratch paper and a writing utensil for your student, so they can jot down notes and/or ideas.

Note: We will not be using the chat feature for this class, so please make sure you have microphone access. Thank you :)
