Class Experience

Let's share our favorite things together!

This is an introductory course designed especially for early elementary learners. Students are encouraged to bring 1-2 items each week that they want to share with the group. Each child will have a turn to tell us a few things about their show-and-tell items. Once they have shared, we will ask the other students to give feedback in the form of questions and comments before moving on to the next child. The teacher will also follow up with questions and observations that help the presenter to feel seen and appreciated. With any time remaining, we will play an additional light-hearted game together. These games will always be developmentally appropriate and will be cooperative for the most part.

This class is not just about showing off our cool stuff and making new friends. It is a safe, inclusive space to grow and practice our developing social skills, classroom or group learning skills, communication and presentation skills, and more. We will practice:
*taking turns
*public speaking
*following directions
*asking for help
*asking questions related to the topic
*giving positive feedback to our peers
*dealing with frustration and impatience
*teamwork and emerging friendship skills
*kindness and empathy
*building confidence

I'm excited to get to know each student, including what gets them excited. I'm a big fan of collections, special objects, special interests, and fandoms of any kind. I might even share a few of my own! ;)

***NOTES:
I strive to create a positive, relaxed learning environment for all of my students. No activities are forced, and sharing is always optional. I am a gentle (albeit enthusiastic) teacher. I welcome all types of learners, and am open to any feedback or communication with parents and caregivers. I want learning to be an AWESOME experience for all of my students.

To this end, I ask you to remember that this age group has a range of developmental skills, and often needs a little more support on both sides of the screen than older students. Please remain nearby your child during class, in case they need social or emotional support, help understanding or navigating instructions, or technical assistance. This makes a huge difference in the quality of their classroom experience, especially for our youngest learners.
Learning Goals
Throughout this class, we will use many different approaches: sharing, discussion, games, and other positive interaction. We will grow and practice our developing social skills, classroom or group learning skills, communication and presentation skills, and more. We will practice:
*taking turns
*public speaking
*following directions
*asking for help
*asking questions related to the topic
*giving positive feedback to our peers
*dealing with frustration and impatience
*teamwork and emerging friendship skills
*kindness and empathy
*building confidence

Parental Guidance
Although the learners will be allowed to choose their own show-and-tell items, final approval will be provided by the teacher as to whether those items are age-appropriate and meet Outschool's safety guidelines. Please help your child to select items that you think would be a good fit for the class. Conversation may be steered gently away from controversial topics (such as guns or violence, for example). Regarding supplies and activities: All physical activities are age and developmentally-appropriate. No physical activities are ever required, and the teacher will provide alternatives methods of participation whenever needed, at the parent's discretion. Playdough MAY contain wheat or gluten and families should be sure to avoid it in case of allergies. A gluten-free recipe and options are available upon request.)
Supply List
Bring your show-and-tell items and think of 2-3 things you would like to share about them.

Student may also be requested to bring some of the following on a week-by-week basis (posted as an update weekly in the classroom posts):
Creative "maker" supplies such as drawing supplies, paper, blocks, magnetic building blocks, snap-together construction blocks, modeling clay or play dough, dice, or other common household items. Substitution ideas are always available upon request and no student will ever be unable to participate due to missing supplies.

I'm so excited to share my love of collecting, toys, books and more with you! I've been teaching STEAM and art classes through fun, engaging topics like to preschool through middle school for 8 years through an independent STEAM education company, as well as at a local arts facility. I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be sharing our excitement about our favorite things--but we'll sneak in some elementary skills, too: comparing and contrasting, observation, social skills and more--all things that elementary kids love to learn and practice!
