Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
This is a novel study of Charlotte's Web with before, during and after reading activities. I will also incorporate learning about farm life by adding videos I have created and pictures of the farm concepts we are discussing.

The class will make predictions before the chapter to better understand what is happening in the story. We will discuss the predictions in the Outschool classroom tab. The students will make self to text, text to text and text to world correlations.
The students will read Charlotte's Web at home either independently or with someone able to read to them. If your child can't read it independently, it is ok to read it to them.
I will post discussion questions on the Outschool classroom page. The students will answer any discussion questions and be able to discuss the story with each other. They may type a comment, share a writing, or post their own video response.

I will also provide a pdf paper copy of comprehension checks that you may print and scan to the classroom page or message me, if your child does not know how to type yet.

Week 1 - read and discuss chapters 1-4 plus "How do you take care of livestock?" I will talk about our bucket calves. The class will also learn how we take care of our other animals such as horses and chickens.
Week 2 - read and discuss chapters 5-9 plus "Why are insects important?"
Week 3 - read and discuss chapters 10-14 plus "What is it like growing up on a farm?"
Week 4 - read and discuss chapters 15-19 plus "Let's go to the county fair?" "What is 4-H?" "Why is 4-H important?" "What happens at the county or state fairs?" "How can I get involved?" Yes even people that live in the city can be in 4-H.
Week 5 - read and discuss chapters 20-22 plus "Animal and insect life cycles."

The last week the students will also have an overall project that is due. I will give them 3 choices that they may choose from for the project. I will also give them a rubric to use to guide them as they make their project. The choices are just ideas and they may choose their own topics if they wish.

The students will interact with each other by commenting on discussion questions in the Outschool classroom tab. They can use videos, type their comment in the comment box or scan their handwritten work. They will also respond using story maps and other interactive ways to connect with each other plus the story.

This class is a flexible class with NO live classes. All classroom materials will be loaded in the classroom. I will post everyday Monday-Friday. If I can not post one day then I will post ahead and let you know. I am willing to meet with any learners who would like to ask questions live.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
**There will be some discussion of where our food (meat) comes from. Nothing graphic in nature and all age appropriate. I like to give a heads up because I do know there are kids who are animal lovers and I want to respect everyone. I do think it is important to teach children where their food comes from so they can make informed choices. When the topic comes up, I will put a disclaimer on it so they may skip it if you wish.
