Charlotte's Web: A Novel Study and Book Club

US Grade 2 - 5
Over the course of 6 weeks, students will meet twice a week to discuss the novel Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. Students will discuss characters and events of the story, using critical thinking skills to deepen their understanding of the novel and learning what true friendship entails. Students will answer questions about the novel, including character actions and motivations. We will also learn new or unfamiliar vocabulary used in the novel. Students will use critical thinking skills to deepen their understanding of the story. Students will use context clues to learn new vocabulary words. Students will compare and contrast events and characters in the story. Students will learn about farm life and the life of a spider. Students will summarize the story and relate it to themselves.
I am a former elementary school teacher and I have taught this novel/unit to multiple groups of students in the classroom and online.
Homework Offered
Students are responsible for reading the chapters prior to class. Activities not completed in class may need to be finished outside of class time.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will not be formally assessed, however through discussion and activity completion, students will be formally assessed.Grades Offered
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White paper and pencil (lined and blank paper) printouts that will be provided in the classroom
Please be aware, we will be discussing farm life and how animals may be killed for humans to eat.
