Students will experience a Charlotte Mason artist study focusing on Van Gogh paintings. As a former teacher at a school that practiced the Charlotte Mason method, I have experience with conducting a picture and artist study with my students. We will meet virtually, hear a short, age-appropriate biography of our artist; study the picture, and then have a discussion about the painting. Students will get to experience a historical piece of art and will help to develop their verbal communication skills. What is the value of a picture study? In Charlotte Mason’s own words, from her seminal work Home Education (1906): They should take one artist after another, term by term, and study quietly some half-dozen reproductions of his work in the course of a term…The children should study a subject quietly for a few minutes; and then, the picture being removed, say what they have seen in it…. Something definite [of the content of the picture] remains with a child after his studies; but this is the least of the gains. We cannot measure the influence that one or another artist has upon the child’s sense of beauty, upon his power of seeing, as, in a picture, the common sights of life; he is enriched more than we know in having really looked at even a single picture.

As a little girl, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. At holiday parties I would be with all the younger kids reading a story or organizing a game. My goal as a teacher is to make sure my students are having fun while learning. As a young reader and someone with dyslexia I also struggled with reading.
A fun fact about me: I once bought a 26 foot RV, named her Rita, and kept her for 2 years having all kinds of fun adventures with my family!
