5 in-class hoursClass Experience
In this 5 week course, students will be honing their art skills using charcoal. We will be focusing on light and shadow throughout the whole class but having an specific theme for each week. At the beginning of class, after checking in with everyone to make sure they are doing okay, we will look at some examples that we will be focusing on for the class. After the teacher gives a few demonstrations about specific techniques for the day. We will then move on to working on our own drawing for the class. Throughout the time in class, the teacher will check in with students to see how they are coming along and answer questions or give tips to students who may need help. When starting the drawings we will always start off messy and scribbly, then gradually start to refine the image as we add in more lights and shadows. So days we may finish the drawing, other times we may not. Overall, it is a time to play an discover new techniques with charcoal. Below is a rough outline of what we will be working on over the weeks. If students have something specific they want to work on, we may change up the class just a bit. Week 1: Material Exploration and Shapes with Light Week 2: Still Life Weeks 3: Still Life Week 4: Portraits Week 5: Portraits

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Wyoming
Hello,
My name is Ms. Elizabeth Suriani, and I am a full-time artist from Northern Colorado. I graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a minor in Art History in 2016. While at the University of Wyoming I primarily studied 2D art style, including oil painting and print making. I also studied in Florence, Italy during the fall of 2015 where I studied architectural and figurative drawing, as well as fresco restoration.
Since 2015 I have been teaching art and art history to students ranging from ages 5-17 years old with lessons ranging from basic instructions, all the way to advanced classes and color theory for older students. I love teaching art and am currently teaching two international students in Italy and Thailand.
I have recently returned home from teaching English as a second language in Bangkok, Thailand with students aging from 2-16 years old. I loved working with my students and miss them dearly.
On top of being a full-time artist, I have also started my own jewelry business, as well as teaching English Language to children in China!
When teaching, I love to keep things fun and light. I believe that seriousness doesn’t do a young mind any good when learning art at an early age, it tends to discourage them instead. I want to help my students find art or anything they are passionate about and feel like they have a space to ask questions, experiment, and flourish.
I can’t wait to see you in class!
