Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
If you love writing stories, practicing creative writing skills, or creating characters, then this camp is a wonderful option for you!
This class is ALL about character development! We will learn how to develop our fiction characters with fun writing exercises. In doing this, we will also explore how to characterize these characters.

What will a typical class look like?
Using a PowerPoint, we will start each class by talking about a different way to characterize characters. Then, we will use a writing exercise to practice this concept. In each class, we will write for anywhere from 10-25 minutes. Once that is finished, the students and I will discuss what they have written, examining how that relates to their character and other skills of storytelling (plot, setting, dialogue, etc). There will also be some kind of simple homework to help the students practice the concept on their own.
We may give constructive feedback or even discuss different story ideas as a class, so please make sure that your student is comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism from me and other students.

What is expected from students?
Every student enrolled in this class will be expected to participate in the in-class writing exercises and discussions. Every student will be given the opportunity to share what they wrote, but that will always be optional. Students are encouraged to participate in homework, as that is the time where they really explore how our material relates to their own writing style. Writing is a process and the process takes practice.

What to expect from me?
I will ensure that any and all discussions will be kind and constructive. I will ensure that classes begin and end on time. I will ensure that all of my students feel welcomed and comfortable. I hope that this class will inspire them to keep practicing their writing skills, no matter the challenges they face!

Hi everyone! I am Teacher KerrieAnn. Here at Outschool, I enjoy teaching a variety of English classes ranging from skill-specific classes to overall improvement.
I enjoy teaching the skills I learned through my B.S. from Middle Tennessee State University. I studied how to write fiction pieces ranging from poetry and short stories all the way to novels. Given this, I love to teach students how to write their preferred type of fiction while also encouraging them to try something new. I also enjoy teaching students how to develop their writing "toolbox" and grow through the process of storytelling!
Given that I am a writer myself, my classroom environment is founded on mutual respect. Meaning, it is an encouraging, kind, and fun environment to discover and learn within.
I hope that my classes will strike new interests and passions that students can share with others and use to grow their wealth of knowledge.
