Class Experience

Students will read assigned chapters for homework and then will discuss these chapters during class with the teacher and other learners.
Before class begins learners should purchase, or check out from a library, a copy of the book Out of My Mind by Sharon draper.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The main character and some of her classmates are occasionally referred to as "retarded" by other students in her school. We will discuss why calling anyone names is wrong and cruel. I will specifically explain to learners that using the term "retarded" is very offensive when speaking to and about people who learn differently than others. This book offers great learning opportunities for learners to discover that, everyone, regardless of physical and mental abilities, are equally deserving of kindness, respect and inclusion.
