Description
Class Experience
Students will complete assigned reading before each class. During class students will learn about plot, setting, characters and themes. They will learn information about the author of the book we are reading. Students will learn and apply new vocabulary words found in the text. They will learn to make connections between what they read, other books and media, their daily lives, and the world.
I am passionate about children's literature. Bookworms and reluctant readers alike enjoy good stories. I believe children can enjoy reading if an age (and reading level) appropriate book is presented to them in a fun and exciting way. For over 30 years, I have taught children to read, taught novel studies, and I have lead children's book clubs and classroom read-alouds of award winning chapter books. I am a patient teacher with a lot of experience teaching students online.
Students will complete assigned reading for homework. (If your child is not a strong reader, it is fine if someone reads the assignment to them. Being read to is a fun and wonderful way to develop a love of reading!) Students will read approximately one chapter each day for homework. Chapters in this book are fairly short and should not take long to read. Students will also have short writing assignments to complete for homework. These assignments may include activities such as writing sentences with a few vocabulary words, drawing a picture of their favorite scene in the assigned reading, or answering two or three questions about the reading. The final assignment due in the last class meeting will be a book report. We will cover in detail how to complete this book report.
Students should purchase, or check out from a library, a copy of the book Because of Winn-Dixie by author Kate DiCamillo.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
