Before this class begins, learners should purchase, or check out from a library, a copy of the book Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This book is story about a family who immigrate to New York from Ireland at the turn of the 20th century. One of the pivotal moments in the book involves the Triangle Shirtwaist fire of 1911. The author does a wonderful job setting the scene for this tragic event. The fear that the victims felt, and the pain and loss the families of the 146 people who died in the fire endured is is written in a realistic, but not sensationalized, and age-appropriate way.
