Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Chapter Book Battle Camp will motivate, challenge, and celebrate readers of all levels. As we build a supportive community of readers together, this summer camp will cultivate a deeper love of reading that will last far beyond the length of this course. The interactive fun and friendly chapter book competition games between students during each live class will strengthen reading comprehension skills, acknowledge individual perseverance and effort, provide good sportsmanship practice, and reinforce individuals as we build a reading community within the course.

Chapter Book Battle Club will meet online for 45 minutes once every week for ten meetings. Students will read an assigned chapter book (or listen to the audiobook version) prior to each class so they can come to class ready to discuss, analyze, and compete!

Students will come to each meeting prepared to discuss and compete in a interactive and fun reading comprehension and trivia game about the assigned book using Kahoot! Students also have the option to let their creativity shine by creating an artistic representation illustrating one scene from the assigned book outside of class and bring the art to class to share if they would like to. During the last class, students will compete in a live and interactive Final Chapter Book Battle. The final battle will consist of mixed trivia questions about all nine chapter books students read during Chapter Book Battle Club.

Each class meeting of Chapter Book Battle Camp will begin with the opportunity to participate in a literature circle discussion during class about the assigned book. For students that would like to prepare prior to class for literature circle discussions, the list of my questions is available to enrolled learners in the first post on the classroom page, as well as sent in the welcome email upon enrollment. After the discussion, students will spend the remainder of class battling against peers in a live and interactive reading comprehension trivia competition game. All questions and answer choices will be read aloud to make the competition accessible to all students. This class is dyslexia, autism, and ADHD friendly. The top five performing Chapter Book Battlers will be announced and celebrated at the end of each class and posted on the classroom page as well for parents to monitor.

Students will need to check out or purchase a print, digital, or audiobook copy of each of the nine Chapter Book Battle titles on the course supply list. If students have Audible or access to Learning Ally, this is a wonderful way to access audio versions of the books. Students are encouraged to read the appropriate assigned book prior to class in whatever way works best for them - students can read individually, with family, or by listening to the audiobook. During online class meetings, students will communicate by speaking to the teacher and other students.
